Ocean Hotels Barbados is working towards achieving the prestigious Travelife for Hotels & Accommodations Gold Certification. This internationally recognised certification assesses a property's commitment to social, environmental, and economic sustainability. To earn this gold standard, we must meet 163 criteria covering a wide range of topics, including:

ENERGY

Ocean Hotels has reduced its energy use by installing low-energy lighting, ensuring that in-room air conditioning is set to a minimum temperature, our team has been trained to turn off any lights or air conditioning units when not in use, we have also been monitoring our energy efficiency.

WATER

We monitor our water meter readings every night and monitor our usage. By doing this we are able to locate and fix any pipes that were damaged and leaking, saving the hotel money and the natural resource! The hotel measures its performance regularly to monitor the impact of its sustainability efforts, we report on results and plan improvements for upcoming months.

WASTE

Ocean Hotels is reducing the amount of waste it produces by implementing a waste minimisation programme, including reducing the amount of resources used, reusing materials and recycling, using refillable containers and buying in bulk.

COMMUNICATION WITH GUESTS

Ocean Hotels encourages guests to take part in their efforts and their sustainability activities. We provide information on the various ways they can make a difference, for instance not changing their towels daily, to help save water, closing the doors whilst the A/C is on or informing them about protected areas in Barbados. We remind guests to help protect the unique natural and cultural characteristics of our island, so that it can continue to be beautiful and sustainable holiday destiantion in the future

SUPPORTING PEOPLE

Travelife certification shows that the hotel is committed to treating people fairly and with respect. As well as providing good working conditions for staff and investing in its employees by providing regular training.  Ocean Hotels is an active member of the local community and the hotels support local people by donating school supplies to local charities such as Pack For a Purpose.

SUPPORTING PEOPLE

Pack for a Purpose is linked to the Variety – the Children’s Charity of Barbados Inc. and is dedicated to improving the lives of children who are mentally, physically or socially disadvantaged as well as the Aunty Olga Memorial School Aid Programme. This provides school uniforms, books, backpacks and school supplies to over 300 children from 200 families across Barbados, giving them an equal opportunity at education.

LOCAL ECONOMY AND LOCAL BUSINESSES

We support the local community from an economic perspective by buying food/other services from local suppliers and encouraging our guests to visit local restaurants, markets and attractions, so that they have an opportunity to support the local economy.

We encourage our guests to join our sustainability efforts by making small changes, like reusing towels to save water, closing doors while the A/C is on, and respecting the island's protected areas. Together, we can help protect the unique natural and cultural beauty of Barbados for future generations.
